Poem Artwork

 Nocturnal Reality

To know someone who believes

the summit of love’s climb is illusive

accepts wholly the unique experience.

But…

As spoken to a confidant's heart,

How vivid the experience

Beneath the down covers of sleep.

The good times,

The first,

The second,

The third,

The fourth.

Even lost relationships

Gather together

Like a cloudless sky

Of sunlight’s joy

When one abandons any

Victimization suffering.

In one case…

First,

Theatre became real.

Second,

Travel carried the baton.

Third,

Joy in spite of scheming.

Fourth,

Dreams did come true

Until they didn’t.

Yet…

Now is but a time

To sink into nocturnal reality

And keep alive those furtive moments of love.

How unexpected

To carry into those eight hours of slumber

The joy of good times,

Open to expanding.

How rewarding…

This experience

Of giving credence to:

Better to have loved and lost

Than never to have loved at all.

Might it be…

Honest joy of loving

Can’t be known

Without some modicum

Of disappointment.

After all…

To know light,

One has to have known dark.

"it is far better to have been loved and lost, than to never have been loved at all."

My dreams are sometimes filled with the wonderful memories of long ago loves the sweetness still remains although the memory fades.

Yes, even the crumbs from love's table are worth the effort to savor, even amid all the potential disappointments. Opposites, it seems, always come into play. As you rightly say at the end: "To know light, one has to have known dark."

This poem pulls up to the chin the luminous covers of the comfort quilt. I felt it reading your poem, Odin. Not just the photograph (although she looks pretty cold to me, but only because it’s winter right now :) but the cushiony feeling so well said here with “When one abandons any/ Victimization suffering.” I love that concept — walking away from one’s own endured emotional pain. And I love the idea of carrying into slumber the incredible lightness of loving even after loss; still loving and holding that feeling into subconsciousness. Excellent piece of thinking here. ~~ djl

The sway of yin and yang, so prevelant in all things...

Light and dark - Hot and cold - Truth and lies - Joy and sorrow ...yet one will always give way the other, just for a while; until we decide which is right and which is an illusion.
