Framing the Breeze

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

The season for exchanging “stuff” is about to pass on, i.e., credit card debt and all of the generous or careless expenditures. This time of year bears looking at those values that are not the tangible kind. “What is the sound of one hand clapping,” a question with no answer. It is a classic Zen koan given to students to aid in enlightenment by leading the mind into a cul-de-sac with no way out but enlightenment. (Painting by Andrew Wyeth)

Poem Artwork

Framing the Breeze

Holding onto that which is unholdable

Represents many of the subtle invisible values life affords,

Akin to the sound of one hand clapping,

Or the seeing of one’s lifeline of oxygen

Which is also most often unseen.

And yet we often ignore such gifts.

To stand before an open window,

Feel the breeze from the ocean,

Watch the undulations of a lace curtain,

Is to feel peace from within,

As one of Nature’s caresses

Letting us know each breath we take

Is an acknowledgment that the quiet zephyr

Is there as a reminder

That the mind’s eye is capable of framing

Any and all spectral nebulae of dreamlike gifts,

Letting us know there is much to be thankful for.

We only have to imagine.

Imagination is the best gift that nature has offered us.

Once again I admire the ability of Andrew Wyeth to paint the impossible movement of breeze on transparent curtains like almost no other painter could do in two dimensions. Amazing!

What is the sound paralyzed hands clapping? Piss poor,7 if one can hear at all the sound of knuckles hitting the soft inner right hand with no clapping retort at all. You touched on one of my major disabilities when applauding good work. And I'm not emotional enough to hoot and holler like some.

But that is not a rhetorical question challenging the mind like your prosetry.

Paintings of Andrew Wyeth always a great source of inspiration, in this case "framing the breeze"; not an easy thing to do but you both have done so well. Stanza two especially beautifully expressed in its imagery.
