Mind Grifters

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

We often allocate all our impressions of grifters to movie depictions) unaware that a substantial percentage of the very people involved in the film industry are themselves grifters. How could anyone forget “Wag the Dog?” (Image alamy)

Poem Artwork

Mind Grifters

They come in all sizes,

Sex,

Smarts,

And

Heart depressions

They come in…

Striped suits

Velour sweat suits

Mini skirts

No skirts

Charming smiles

Lethal grins

You’ll find them in…

Churches,

Country clubs,

Bars,

Hotel lobbies

And other make-believe environments.

“Got a money need

I got a money solver.”

(with some first-aid for your ego as well)

Then there’s the…

Sting,

The stung

The tactic switcheroo

The pinch

The squeeze

The come on

To end all come-ons

Grifters of the mind…

Know not the pain

Or loosing judgment

Cloaked in you’re a winner

Veiled with painless surrender

Thefts of one’s cognitive ability…

Is rape of the senses

Con of the spirit

(and whatever is left)

Oh, the feeling…

I’m a Redfprd

I’m a Newman

I know where the short hairs are

And how to sting them.

Jump on the carousel…

Palomino

Giraffe,

Angry bear

Relax in a seat

Grip the pole

You never know

Venture off the lot…

Find the stagedoor sidewalk…

Suckers galore

One color-chess

Beneath shell game-shuffle

Cup cup cup

Slide slide slide

Of course you know where it is.

Everybody wins

Until you don’t

A brush of the nose right…

A return brush of the nose left

Yeah…

You’re a duo

Papa died

Offspring thrived

Digital ease

Scam-o-rama theirs forever

Until it’s not

Such are the ones that fain worshiping entertainment

And seldom offer a morsel of takeaway worth

From a grifter mindset…

Winners are only occasionally rewarded

With the chance- pebble under the cup you choose.

I'm glad you returned to your old nemesis. Maybe there was something in Sen. Joe McCarthy's hard on for the entertainment industry. Perhaps not. ;-)

Why I never trusted promoters, gurus, fortune tellers, prophets, preachers, agents or verbal contracts because they always tended to feather their own nest rather than provide any real assistance like my teachers and mentors did in school and on the street. The latest buzzword is for "influencers" on the Internet. The worst of those are those political radio and television talk show pundits who push an agenda.

Charisma isn't what it's cracked up to be. And Hollywood hype is way overrated.

One loaded word for this: Passion. I’ll be looking back here to see what comments respond to this delivery, a piece of writing that streaks off the page, so very fitting it i highlighted. One can imagine the voice delivering these lines. How could a person not listen and hear. All chips truly are on the table in not just our country but ever elsewhere. May decency play through. Keep the writing going. ~~ djl
