Loneliness Finding Freedom

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

How interesting to discover the essence of a subject written in the past as a “what if,” only to find in later years the “what if” is a reality realized when it counts most, when making the most out of living alone requires finding the freedom in a different form. “Thankfulness” for what one has is sometimes a mantra difficult to voice. Might some dreams exist for the sole lesson of knowing how and when to give them a respectful rest? (Surreal image by Ogizcrypt)

 Loneliness Finding Freedom

From atop a midtown high-rise
Central Park and skyline rooftops
drift southward

Pigeon cages
of winged confinement
await daily flight

of a master's whim

Other open-sky luxury decks
display tiny specks moving about
potted plants
forest make-believe
beach chair illusions
lounge escapees
eyes and expunged arrogant smoke
curling upward
elaborate hookah gurgling more enhancement

Further downtown plateaus

blistering sun forges blistering shadows
as a sculptor chisels reality to his liking
afternoon cocktail hubris abounding
Great Dane peering downward through cast iron fence
another trophy piece in captivity

Still further

Wall Street pleasures
penthouse competitions
lap pools
putting greens
bodyguard sentries

What peculiar isolation
these high aloft symbols of freedom
drawn to my senses
through telescopic glass
Searing my synapses
wonderment and sorrow colliding

Tilting away
Tilting down

The street rises to my tripod
more discordant images
murmuring wanderlust
from hearts beneath hunched shoulders
atop dashing wanna-be feet
their dodgem car deftness
avoiding streetwise collisions of reality
unaware their treadmill
roils without borders

Innocently

Undulating strings of balloons set free
float skyward
naïve child
holds tight
dreaming on high
knowing not what dreams above and beyond loneliness may come

How innate is innocence at the start.

From what I read, it appears that you think of freedom in the city to be practiced on the rooftops of the wealthy. In the case of the Great Dane and the pigeons, and ability to capture helpless animals to help mend loneliness.

I don't think children, when I hear them laughing in a playground or in Central Park, are thinking of escaping by gas-filled balloons. But perhaps, lonely adults are. Wishing they had the freedom to just ignore their lowliness and have fun with what they have.

Your final image is especially poignant of the child holding, indeed clinging to, the balloons as we cling to our hopes and dreams.
