Endings as Beginnings

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Life is a continuum; neither black nor white, but a series of shades from light to dark. When the shadow is in front of you, all you see is the darkness and forget the sun is at your back

Poem Artwork

Endings as Beginnings

I no longer struggle to gather my severed being

Into the person I thought I was,

For even though existence may be slow,

Discovery has proven all is an enormous singleness,

All life is a purposeful whole.

And…

Like the shifting sands of an hourglass,

There comes the time to turn it over,

To grant renewal.

I shall keep close attention

As the sand of Time is skittish.

The present will go.

But even as sands often blow wild,

I will find purchase with the now

As I watch beyond the hourglass

All the people rushing in impulsive self-importance

Daring the dunes of quicksand threat,

Accepting not the epiphanic truth,

The oneness of it all,

Where risk is but a test of honesty.

The separateness they cling to is as if

They are an hourglass of interminable self-absorption

That fears accepting endings,

Knowing not that conclusions

Allow new beginnings,

Beget renewals,

Accommodate Life’s continuum.

Childrens’ books can sometimes have 3–D pop-ups that surprise and define and enliven the story. Many of your writings have pop-ups in them, Odin, but of the challenging literature kind. Surprises. These first two lines do that for me. It’s the words “gather my severed being” — paired with “person I thought I was” — that’s the pop-up in that “Beget renewals,” then creates two planes — flat and raised. Maybe this comment doesn’t make sense to someone other than me, but even ‘risk’ and ‘test of honesty’ feel 3-D. Richard’s review has a sentence that fits here, I think: “The power we have in choosing for ourselves is mind-boggling.” ‘Endings as Beginnings’ contains such powerful choosing of vocabulary, “But even as sands often blow wild,/I will find purchase with the now”. Enjoyed this* Now I’ll go take my red lens/green lens glasses to my AD page and post a writing today. I love reading others’ writings more than posting my own, but can’t have Marco Polo if voices don’t call out, “Polo!” ~~ djl

Yes, life is a continuum of beginnings and endings, and then, beginnings again. One never knows when one ends one part of one's life, whether the next coming forth from the last will be better are not. One could look at retirement as a death sentence or a way of renewing a new and more exciting life. It's all in perspective.

Life is a journey that never ceases to challenge, frustrate, and exhilarate. Every second, an end and a beginning. You know where you've been. You know where you are. But you don't necessarily know where you're going. The power we have in choosing for ourselves is mind-boggling. Dostoevsky proffered: "The mystery of human existence is not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for." I agree with that. Thanks for encouraging thought. It's one of your enduring gifts. Peace and health.... r
