Loitering Spirits

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Aging isn’t a loss. Look forward to all it reveals to only those of many years. Yes, old age often brings Halloween early for some… daily. (Image by playgroun

Poem Artwork

Loitering Spirits

What is it to give oneself a dark night and no sleep?

Visiting every place you have ever lived,

Perhaps beginning with the house of your first memory

Where you sat in your parents always dim lit bedroom

Watching and listening to the tick of the antique clock.

To roam the old neighborhood where you dealt with

School,

Street sports,

Friends,

Enemies,

Coming of age disappointments.

Per chance

You’ll find your buddy’s homes,

Now boarded up and  run down.

Perhaps junk yards,

Where trees have gnarled themselves

Into images of veterans of many wars,

Crippled limbs looking crutch-like.

And yes…

There will be the surprises.

A black cat leaping out of the shadows

Crossing your path with an arrogance

Only cats can project.

You might show affection for the feline.

In return,

It might rub up against your leg

And let you know he’ll be your guide this dark night

On this street with missing buildings,

Missing lights,

Missing people,

With a few loitering spirits.

The broad sweep of a lifetime -- beginning with the first, and then every place you ever lived -- and ending with "this dark night" with so much missing, but a "few loitering spirits." Thank God they have not taken leave, turning "old age? into a gain rather than a loss. Love the image of the black cat. You couldn't ask for a more interesting companion, always intriguing, never dull, and yes arrogance, no false humility there.

Powerful imagery where I feel I have walked alongside you on your night ramble through life experiences and memories.

The cat is a lovely companion! I'm pretty sure one of my cats, a stray who had a broken leg that healed remarkably well, is a shape-shifter púca with an ulterior motive:) He definitely likes to walk with me on outdoor rambles.

The "missing" reality you refer to is a poignant reminder of the passing of time. Nothing stays the same.
Blessings, Odin.

This might be a ying/yang day for creative writing. John Herlihy’s contribution was a savory set of couplets I loved commenting on, and here are your stanzas in what I see as signature style (centered) with connective tissue, “And yes…” and “In return,” as well as oft-found in your work ‘but yet..’. Here the painting is embossing anticipations, with that curious yellow-orange light sprinkling itself into the darkness. I am taken even by the first four words written “Aging isn’t a loss.” New favorite for the tattoo I’ll never have. I felt like you took a reader’s hand to walk the journey of this poem. Touching on your story’s detail of sound of clock, mention of enemies (an innocent child’s first shock of cruelty), and “buddy’s homes” adjacent to “crippled limbs” taking into our eyes in the same bite. Loneliness of ‘goneness’ still being full of recollection, an affectionate little black life form. . . and one solitary lamplight glow in the darkness. Very enjoyable read, Odin. ~~ djl

I can relate. I've had my share of 'struggle to sleep' nights. The forces that can plague the brain and infiltrate the dream state are mind-boggling, to say the least, and can at times debilitate and confuse. On a lighter note: Some people believe that seeing black cats in dreams represents bad luck or even death. Some believe it informs the dreamer of hidden potential, creativity, intuition, and psychic abilities. I think the most troublesome thing is when you realize the black cat is you. The image harmonizes with your thoughts. Thanks for sharing. r
