Life's Halves

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Many of us spend lifetimes pursuing our purpose, often having to fend off the downer feeling of being incomplete.

Poem Artwork

Life’s Halves

Existing incomplete

Is like the floundering of a broken ship

Drifting into exhaustion.

Half is me.

The other half is you.

The whole remains in progress.

Even as…

One side of the skylight faces me,

The other faces infinite movement.

But…

Like the inexpressible space

That leaves me thinking how to express,

You become bored waiting

For me to express

What you may already know.

Still…

Having fallen from an exalted platform,

I continue skeptical of eminence.

And, having been burned many times by flaming shadows,

Hidden fires remain a frightful concern.

Perhaps…

When separation strips whole into halves,

It’s merely one’s Yin and Yang seeking new purchase.

And…

Death shouldn’t be a frightening thought

For one’s never died before

And the quintessential epiphany might be…

Birth finding its inevitable other half.

I am particularly taken with this verse: "Death shouldn't be a frightening thought, for one's never died before." We tend to think of death as a one-off experience, whereas in fact, we die many times in our lives, in a manner of speaking, as if in preparation for "the final breath", which is, in effect, but a prelude to birth "finding its inevitable other half." Love your final thought.
