Lifeless Wine of Grief

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

There are many ways to describe suffering, most of which seldom realize to embrace the hurt is to give it the courage to heal. “I can do nothing for you but work on myself. You can do nothing for me but work on yourself” – Ram Dass. (Image by temu.com)

 Lifeless Wine of Grief

Discovery.

Genuine suffering may lead to rejoicing,

Just as lifeless wine exuding the smell of rancidity

Will arrest one’s olfactory sense to where the accompanying astringent taste

Merges with the raspy finish,

Convincing one that happiness in life

Is often difficult,

But a primary purpose of consciousness.

Malignant sorrow often engulfs those of inauthentic being,

Those unwilling to recognize the paradox,

The mutual connection

Between suffering a painful veracity

Is often necessary to find that moment

Of one’s inner truth rising,

Ready to emerge

As a celebratory moment,

When the deepest part of the hurt

Accepts the pain,

Knowing to suffer

Is to afford the mind and heart

To reflect on the fetal position warmth

That allows empathy

To be a healing power for that

Which caused one’s torturous experience.

How jubilant the epiphany,

Remembering the bouquet

Of a wine full of life,

A restorative blood of sorts,

Reserved for the kindness

That forgiving engenders.

I love the wine corollary. The bitter taste of hardship that leads to understanding and well-being. Who has not suffered at one point or another? It's how we come through it better by the suffering that makes us who we are.

Since suffering is inevitable as part of the human condition, almost like a clause in our contract and no one can escape it, as the Buddha rightly advised, we need to come to terms with it somehow. For life goes on and we cannot drag the milestone of suffering around our livers like a ball and chain. As you astutely put it: "How jubilant the epiphany remembering the bouquet of a wine full of life." Suffering has its moment, but all moments pass. It's the way of the world.
