Looking and Seeing

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

Our future President’s choice for Border Czar, Thomas Homan along with Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth ( a man coming from Fox News)…make up a threat reminiscent of behavior during our Civil War and World War II and the lead up. Thoughts here are not a conspiracy theory exercise. Just plain information that is in front of us… and behind. Let us hope for the best. (Image by Odin AI)

 Looking and Seeing

A mother of swirling black smoke bore you
Bundled in burlap
Atop burning earth's dust bowl

Before you

A life of sweat-tainted tobacco leaves and cotton bales
Shrouded in tight braids of hate's acrid air

While above...

Above were only your father's cries of mercy
Filling the grit-dense clouds
As Jim Crow rode the thunder
Looking down to make more the same
More swaddling to construe miscreant

Still

Painfully

Some of us
Considering history
Peer skyward
See the many blind eyes
Instead of stars
And remind ourselves
The past always sends forward its remains
To be a haunting presence
Helping us see
What consciousness is truly looking at

To have eyes in the back of one’s head would be a plus

But realistically…

Your eyes need to be a spinning axis

So...

For those who would champion deportation of immigrants

Let not the historic past of the African American plight be forgotten

Go ahead,

Try and pick a safe place

A place that lets your eyes and ears relax

With the actual ability to see and hear humanity

Attempt to exercise moments of compassion and grace.

Such is a difficult task for many American citizens

Given the country is about to live in a militaristic age of chance

Threatening so many tosses of loaded dice

Best we “watch our six”

Your poem is a fine one, as always, Odin. We have always been frank with each other. In light of that I have to say this: the slaves were brought here through no fault of their own. They were brought here and forced to work for their masters (I hate that word, master, unless it refers to Christ,) They had no choice in anything and had to do what they were told or they would be whipped or killed. This is totally different than people who invade our country illegally. They come in illegally and are given everything they need to survive and do nothing to deserve it. Fema seems to be so depleted by caring for people who are not citizens while our own citizens in disaster areas are not being cared for.I say be compassionate to illegal immigrants until they can be sent back to their own countries. If they need sancturary there are legal ways for them to obtain it and we should give it. Your poetry always makes me think, it's not something to read lightly. It needs to be digested slowly and with an open mind.
