Mediocrity’s War Zone
Creative arts may be fighting a final battle.
Triviality and paltriness pulsate
From the ubiquitous cell phones,
Seemingly glued to the hands of a populous
Clutching the implement of advance technology
Like a pacifier,
Pampering the suckling nature
Of childlike groping for attention.
Many thrive on clever ways
To avoid certain discomforts,
Usually reverting to less than genuine pretext,
And voila.
Out the side door with another
Successful manipulation accomplished.
And so…
Even as the heat of maneuvering begins to ignite,
The army of cell phone addicts becomes a relentless tide
Assaulting all the carefully conceived visions and sonances in its path
Creating a pandemic of Tom Dick and Harry fever.
Like sorrily imitating poetic thought,
Mundane greeting card text
Relegates effective rhapsodic reflection--
Once a beacon of illuminating conception--
To but undertones in the the cacophony
Of digital noise.
In an effort to rise above the din,
Chaos often spawns a strange beauty
Breaking through the smoke and ash;
The excellence of human creative audacity steals away
From the mundane,
Trusting the sublime reward
Of each pain-staking inventive result.
Such is the continuance of a testament to the human spirit
And the indomitable presence of inspiration.
Yes…
Artists hear and see the many voices of support and belief,
Even as they too exercise resilience
In the face of mediocrity.
Those of creative preference will always embrace enlightenment
And encourage more.
But it may be just be old fogies railing against the latest wave of youthful exuberance raging against the status quo.
