Mother and Son

Even though a mother may have passed on, the “whys” of life’s journey seem unknowable at times. (Image by Odin AI)

Poem Artwork

 Mother and Son

You shadowed my walks since birth
This journey beyond ocean
Where prickly pears gaze fondly
Our careful approach

You watched as I clumsily explained why
Felines purr to sunlight's ray
Kept me mindful of danger

Even in daylight’s innocent glow

Remember the auto crash
The rolling instants becoming hours
The dust of salient messages premature
All before the quiet
The realm of safety urging…

Now

Today

I climbed the clouds roiling in warnings
The ancient echoes whispering stories
Some of joy
Many of sorrow
All part of another day's ticking time
Waiting out tomorrow

Endlessly asking me

Is there reason
Air floats endless mantras
Just as the butterfly stays aloft
Wings motionless
Sustaining us both
While your shadow
Ventures unimpeded

Still…

How vigilant your silhouette
Where light may be continuing to dim

Often blurring remembrance
When tears of missing you flood

High across eyes still reluctant to accept
Just as your smile stays fixed
Upon my door…

Forever open

A threshold not yet ready for me

I feel so lucky to have a mother to son relationship. Just don’t tell my daughter!

Like reading a mystery where one has to put together the puzzle pieces. I sent a loss of your mother early and perhaps in a rolling car crash. How you often think about her and wonder what it would be like to have her all of your life. Even thinking about the possibility of joining her again in some way.

I was going to say ‘beautiful,’ but John already took that word* — So I will put a purple orchid on this poem and say it makes me feel the dimension of this writing and would love to wear it as my Mother’s Day sash, whether I earned it or not. You done your mother good, Odin. You done good :) ~~ Namaste, djl

Such a beautiful ending to this sublime tribute to mother and motherhood. "Your smile stays fixed upon my door" no doubt meaning the door into the interior of the individual self where one's mother continues to reside all through the son's life until the end. Even in absence there remains a strong sense of presence that will never die. A fine poem indeed.
