Less-is-More

by Odin odin@aflx.com — Read all 3,869 poems by Odin odin@aflx.com

In my 30s, I read a book that changed my life. Collin Fletcher’s The Complete Walker. A book about the simple needs of a man fully met and carried on his back. I was taken for long time with his extraordinary words accompanying me from hikes, to mountaineering, to rock climbing to summits beyond everyday reality. I kept thinking of one of his interviews relating how walking the desert was a sustainable blessing that never faded. (Image by Odin AI)

 Less-is-More

When life is at the dawn of discovery,
Needs are met with ease,
A child’s world
Where wants are satisfied
With the sway of a colorful mobile
Over the crib.
Leaning into the child’s small world
Comes a warm embrace,
A mother’s loving face,
A warm bottle of nourishment
Shelter,
A simple grace.
No yearning for an outside world,
Just basking in the glow of love is more.

But…

As time rolls on and youth makes way
For middle age,
Needs move to center stage,
Become the spotlight glare,
A stage where wants can roil in the draft
Of persuasive coaching coming from the wings.

Business beckons,
Society’s thrall,
Friends,
Family,
The media saturation.

Buy more,
Spend more
Encouraging debt’s silent creep
To become the slavery of wants.

Such a glare,
These performances of media domain,
Selling flickering dreams of life
Where buy buy buy is the endless cry,
Bringing innocent hearts to their knees,
Craving,
Wanting to match,
To beat the others' “haves”
As the urge to obsess on possession
Looks to be an escape from the have-not stress.

Still…

Marketing bangs its drum louder,
Its authoritarian modality becomes ones shroud,
Free will on its knees,
Having so much
While feeling so inadequate,
A hollow life,
A brittle riddle of endless proportions.

To break away
Is to find one’s own desert of vast embrace,
Needing nothing more than his personal kind of backpack,
His house secured atop his shoulders,
His fate free from wants,
From endless chasing,
A walk of slower pace,
Of peace.

In this less-is-more world,
One moves without the chains of desire,
Wishing,
Longing,
Breaking free of a covetous appetite.

Finally…

A soul unbound,
A spirit light,
Smiling with a sigh
In Nature’s arms,
Enjoying a life of freedom
A quiet breeze begetting harmony.

100% agree with the philosophy here. Clutter drives me crazy and I feel better when not responsible for cleaning stuff, I’m a one bag traveller too.

I have always been a minimalist, always travelling, loving hotel rooms that I can enter and leave with my carry-on bag, and always travelling light. Even now, I have next to nothing, just the bare minimum of what I need to get through the day. Always read to open the door and take my leave.

I certainly agree that less is more--more time, more space, more room, more energy, to think, to contemplate, to do more with less. We all seem to need more time, fewer annoynaces to stop cluttering up our lives with jib jab or flim flam. And if we learn just this, it can be enough to let us survive to an old age with fewer regrets, and more time to be thankful. This is quite an awkening tale.

Being frugal has afforded me little material to carry me for the rest of my life. But what little I have, I still see as a burden to others if I should pass and leave it for them to decide what to do with it.

So I'm busy culling my backpack of all the essentials as I take this final walk through the end of my life and hope to be as free as I was when I was born of the encumbrance of things.
