Beholden To?

I knelt before borrowed stars,
wearing gratitude like iron vines around my wrists.
Each promise glittered like frost on a winter branch,
beautiful, temporary, hungry for belief.

I chased voices across horizons of shifting sand,
followed them as moths hurl themselves toward flame,
certain that somewhere beyond myself
an answer waited with my name sewn into its tongue.

But time is a patient tide.

It pulled the gold leaf from every monument,
stripped the paint from cherished masks,
and scattered my certainties like crows from a harvested field.

The people I leaned upon became weather.
The victories I worshipped became dust.
The griefs I feared became passing clouds.
And there, beneath the wreckage of expectation,
I found the cold links of every chain.

They bore no master's mark.

My own fingerprints shimmered across the metal.

So I carried them to a still pond at daybreak.

The water held a mirror bright as a blade.
In its depths stood no rival, no savior, no judge.
Only the keeper of every lock I had mistaken for fate.
Within my palm rested a small forgotten key,
warm as a heartbeat, ancient as breath.

The horizon opened like a wound of gold,
and dawn poured through me.
If every hand releases,
if every possession crumbles,
if every storm passes beyond the edge of memory,
what remains to claim devotion?

The reflection does not answer.

It only meets my gaze,
holding the key,
holding the chains,
holding the dawn.

And I am left to wonder:

Have I ever truly been beholden to another,
or only to the self that chose to believe I was?

A powerful journey that begins in the stars and end in a kind of final reckoning at a still pond., to see one's own reflection holding the key., ending with the final reckoning embedded in a question, beholden to the self that chose to believe I was. Interesting.

A cool question. A lot of introspection in this piece. I believe the key refers to understanding or opening the door to what you're alive should be, and wasn't before.

By using the key, you were free.

Great matching image.
