A Wish
If I had but one wish
To last my whole life long
I would not wish for riches
But I might sing you a song;
I’d let you know I love you
How you enriched my life
I’d thank you for the gift you gave
When you became my wife;
I’d give a nod to heaven
For sending you my way
For turning my dark surroundings
Into a bright and sunny day;
I’d even write a poem
If I could find the words
That reach beyond my vision
When my thoughts make seeing blurred;
I’d hold you close and kiss you
With the innocence of a child
We’d run and jump and play
To the waters and the wild;
And when this day is ended
We’d walk along the shore
I’d whisper thoughts unending
As winds and ocean roar;
And then I’d make that one wish
That comes right from my heart
That you are there beside me
When tomorrow makes its start.
