The Sky the Sea and Me

How dim the start how cool my heart
Our romance was way back then--
How long the days how strong the waves
The things that might have been.
Still I caught your eye and in a fateful sigh
We let our love begin
What might have been became our friend
Our hearts were moored within.

Those were the summer days
For living and for fun
Wrapped in a golden haze
We languished long out in the sun…

How harsh the storm when days grew warm
And our love began to wilt
How soft the sand when you released my hand
And all that we had built
The tide came in
And carried our dreams far out to that endless sea
Now here I am alone again just
The sky the sea and me.

Yes, here I am alone again just
The sky the sea and me.

A beautifully painted ideal love story that, for one reason or another, failed. Using the backdrop of the sea and some conjures up idyllic thoughts in the reader. Well done.

Sorry, Ed, but the sea is mine, but you can have the sky and yourself, just leave the sea to me...:) -e-

Ba-thump! My heart felt this 'exactly the way it feels' poem, Edward! I love the way you acknowledge the sea in the beginning, a hot time on the beach, and then the inevitable storm............back to the "cool my heart" situation between you and the sea! An emotion packed poem!

Love ya!

This was just plain excellent. Enjoyed the words as well as the rhythm , rhyme and flow.

This is a long, lazy summertime poem, reminiscent of days long gone by when people were ready to fall in love. Full of longing and nostalgia.

How very sad, but isn't that the way it often goes? Yet, I'm told the shore is just the place to find someone. Far less dangerous than, say, a dark, smoky bar, and I think infinitely more romantic and conducive to happy endings. Harder to hide in the bright sun.
