A Tribute to Lefties

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

Annually, August 13th is International Left-Handers Day.

To honor my friends who are lefties, struggling to cope in a right-thinking world, I share this poem. Enjoy your day!

Poem Artwork

A lefty, a southpaw – call them what you will,
Each left-handed person has big shoes to fill.
They live in a world centered towards the right;
A challenge, even if their futures are bright.

Lefties do excel in music and the arts,
Even if they struggle to cut paper hearts;
Tools tailored to lefties are visibly rare,
But, lefties are special; they’re too proud to care.

The wisdom of those who think with their right brain,
Is often more wondrous than words can explain.
Faced with the dilemmas that righties won’t know,
Lefties rise above and let their worth show.

Here’s a toast to lefties, since this is your day,
May you share great blessings, in your special way.
Today is your moment to shine like the sun
And prove to the world, you are #1.

My best to you, lefties, for what lies in store;
I wish you success and daydreams galore.
From this moment forward, may you be bereft,
Of the unique trials that befall the left.

Thank you Jill,
As a fellow natural lefty, I was forced to learn how to write wrong handedly( or is it right handedly?) in elementary school, which thoroughly confused me. Now I am hopelessly stricken with indecisive, undecipherable handwriting. Thank god for the qwerty keyboard layout! When using a pen, I have to write with my hand above the line to keep the ink from smearing before it drys. Try it for yourself to see how terrible that would be in a situation where penmanship is considered a sign of good breeding. If I was born in China perhaps the verticle writing would not be a challenge. Their lifestyles must favor and prosper lefties, leading to a revolution in their society and government. No wonder the Chinese culture has survived for thousands of years. Rockie

Here's to all lefties. I am right handed, myself but I have a question who was an ace pitcher for the local ball team. He could have gone professional but chose another life. Your write is beautiful.
God bless,
Lew

Not being a left hand person myself, but knowing many, I can see their struggles. Your poem captures that perfectly with humor mixed in. Great poem.

Ah a sinister view, how most wonderful a tribute, to those so maligned by not just by all the righthanded tools, but the righthanded attitudes, much suffering was caused to those afflicted, especially in times past, now it's just an inconvienience lefties can easily overcome, because as you said, they have the mind for it.
Blessings! Jasmin Horst

I'm a righty, but Karla's a lefty, like you. Cool tribute; more power to our left-handed friends!

(((HUGS))) and much love from Burleson, your friend, Karen Lynn. :D
