As I Was Leaving

by Jill Eisnaugle — Read all 611 poems by Jill Eisnaugle

A poem about being trapped in relationship turmoil and finding the only way to restore peace is to find it within and drift away.

Wednesday, November 6, 2019

As I lay sleeping, my world went adrift
Floating away in a murky abyss
The water once pristine, now a soulless black
A life filled with promise, left under attack
Carried away, as wave upon wave
Washed o’er the sanity and rendered it grave
As every iota just out of my grip
Slowly but surely headed down with the ship
I was left bleeding, my wounds opened raw
Each whitecap its own sucker punch to the jaw
The specks of my soul cowering ‘neath the force
As the tide kept on pounding, showing no remorse
Until everything suddenly became still
The shards of my world gave in to its will
I lost all my power, I had nothing left
But to protect a heart, hollow and bereft
The damage well done, distant memories remained
And none of the reasons could e’er be explained
No sense could be had for why I’d lost the fight
I gave it my all, with my full strength and might
But as I was leaving, a peace formed within
A small, but sure, sign I could be whole again
For as long as I found a faint light through the mire
I’d once again rise from this toxic hellfire
