Choosing to Smile

by Edie M. Batstone — Read all 134 poems by Edie M. Batstone

Circumstances can change in the blink of an eye; what doesn't change is our freedom to choose our response to events. I am always impressed by those beautiful souls who greet the day and those they meet with smiles and laughter even when they are going through pain and issues of their own, who turn hurts into acts of kindness.

A Smile Or A Frown?

When the rain drenches me,
Or I lose the game,
The world won't change,
It will be the same—
Except for the smile
Or the frown that I add;
Will I dance in the rain,
Or get stuck in the sad?

I can paint with colours
Or wallow in gray;
A frown hangs around
And will block the way
Of the love that grows,
Or the sparkle that's born,
When I share a smile
As I start each morn;

So, It's up to me,
When it all comes down,
The choice is mine—
Will I smile or frown?

Lovely to read. I guess we all have that choice. I can't remember a morning when I didn't greet it with a smile. But then, I have someone who smiles back, even though I have interrupted her deep dream sleep.
