Lunching with my friend, Elaine, a highly skilled emergency room nurse, I told her that I needed a referral for an allergist. She smiled at me, using her elusive Mona Lisa smile, almost purring when she told me she had the perfect doctor in mind for me. Reaching into her purse, she gave me one of his cards, warning me that he had a tendency to be gruff and was certainly nothing to look at, but that he was the best in his field of medicine.
Making an appointment later that day, I was told the doctor had a cancellation and that I could see him the next morning at 10:00 A.M. if I wanted to. My sinus's were killing me, so of course I said yes.
In his office the next morning
I was nervous about seeing
A new doctor; after hearing about him
I considered sneaking out the back door.
I was shown into his private office
Resigned to meet a cranky old man
That was most likely ugly and
Had the bedside manner of a toad!
When the doctor stood up, I was mesmerized!
I looked upon a golden speciman of man
That looked as if he had just walked off
The pages of Gentlemans Quarterly
We stood in absolute silence, our eyes
Devouring one another with covert glances
Of raw, naked, pulse throbbing admiration.
It seemed as if there were only the two of us
Until the nurse cleared her throat, introducing us.
"Please, have a seat while I ask you a few questions
Ummm, how long have you had sinus problems?
Tell me all about your condition."
"Where would you like me to start, I inquired?"
Pitching my file to the other end of his desk,
His silken voice murmured "How about the
Day you were born and don't leave anything out."
Okay, the gloves were off; all pretense laid aside
I now needed to decide where to go from here,
How to proceed with this golden Adonis
That obviously had more on his mind,
Than treating my sinuses.
We were both single and there was
An obvious attraction that pulled us under
Like a whirling vortex in the deepest
Ocean, claiming us both as victims.
He quickly stood and walked to my seat,
Extending his masculine hand toward mine,
Pulling me up close to him as he exclaimed'
"Look, I don't know what is happening here
And, this has never happened to me before
But I'm willing to go with these powerful feelings
If you think you want to explore them with me"
I looked up into his gorgeous eyes, saying
The first thing that popped into my mind:
"Doctor, you have the most beautiful brown eyes"
He threw his head back, roaring with laughter
"And you, my dear, have large, luminous green eyes
And the most beautiful red hair I have ever seen."
"Look, I can't even think straight. I'm going to
Give you an allergy medication that should
Help you, but I can't examine you right now
I'm too flustered to even think straight."
"Please, promise me that you will
Meet me for dinner tonight or I won't
Be able to see any patients tomorrow
For tossing and turning all night long
Having wild and exotic dreams about you."
Will you meet me tonight at Trader Vic's?

It may indeed be 'fanciful' fiction
but it's so well grounded in real possibility
and delivered with style.
