The most common reason why people lose their hair is through chemotherapy. From what little that I know about it, the hair grows back. I don't see the great emotional significance of losing one's hair. It is the cancer or other disease that causes it that is traumatic. I recall the young football player with a broken leg and crutches who was so proud to park in the only disabled space at a restaurant. He probably took part in some competition in those crutches to show off his ability to move.
