THAT SPECIAL BLUE BIRD
 
 
Here I am, in my later years
 
listening to that wondrous song once more.
 
I had played its melody so often as a young girl of thirteen,
 
that the record’s vinyl grooves had deepened,
 
Etching the melody forever into my psyche.

“So be like I, hold your head up high, till you find the Bluebird of Happiness…”
 
The lyrics spoke perfectly to my hopes, dreams, and aspirations then.
 
Anything was possible as long as you believed, wasn’t that right?
 
It’s incredible how music can empower us
 
to rise above our everyday circumstances.
 
 
This time I listened to the familiar refrain with a more seasoned ear.
 
Remarkably, as I looked up at my mirror 
 
that girl of thirteen was smiling back at me.
 
Her face was gently wrinkled by time, her eyes twinkled, as she winked at me and said,
 
 “It’s amazing what some hope can do!”
