Picking Up The Weeds

by Myra Wexler Darwish — Read all 62 poems by Myra Wexler Darwish

I've looked back at the decisions that I've made over my lifetime, some have been very wise, and perhaps others may have been made too hastily. Picking Up The Weeds uses the garden as a metaphor
for one's lifelong decisions; its creation was both healing and freeing for me. I believe that being fully human is about embracing, honoring, and ultimately about moving on and forgiving oneself and others." MWD

 PICKING UP THE WEEDS

By, Myra Wexler Darwish

For years I’ve planted flowers
Aptly picking every weed
That was in the way of hiding
The beauty of their seed.

The Begonias and Geraniums
The Orchids, Pansy’s too
Are no less tended as I age,
 For my spirit stays anew.

The weeds are still growing,
Though less in number these days
A tribute to what needed to go,
And all that needs to stay.

As I was weeding this week, I reinterpreted what weeds were...Some of them were sitting so prettily alongside the rest of the flowers, with a dignity that was so engaging, that I left them there...a flower is a flower after all...
Life offers us that choice to reinterpret our past, and to be forgiving and accepting. Wisdom is a gift earned through choices...
Weeds or Flowers?
I love your poem...

I like pansies because they will survive freezes and keep on blooming.

I have been rethinking weeds because we put so many harmful chemicals into our ecosystems just to get rid of insects we don't like. By eliminating weeds we affect biodiversity and endanger our planet when we don't know what we are doing.

I've done my share of weeding and pruning over the years, both internally as well as externally but those darn weeds just keep growing wild.

A poetic way to talk about making the best choices in life. Then to know, life is NOT perfect and there will still be some weeds. Well done!
