Women and girls use computers; men and boys love them, and that difference appears to be a critical reason why computing in America remains a predominantly male province.

While legions of women work with computers in their jobs and many excel as computer scientist and programmers, they are almost without exception bystanders in the passionate romance that men conduct with these machines – whether in computer science laboratories, video-game parlors, garages or dens.

Social scientists say this difference can lead to a disappointment of the hopes that this new industry will be free of the sex disparities of other fields of work.

Sooooo…….

****************************************

Man used to find a lover, after a period in which he'd wooed her.
Now he can just go buy her in the form of his own computer.
Each side, so calculating; for her love he daily does flips
To please her sensuous wires, motherboards, and assorted chips.

With boards or broads, psychologists say, men just want romance,
While women want a relationship, not just a ritual dance.
It used to require two to tango, but that theory's gone kablooey,
'Cause it only takes just one to do computerized ROM boogie.

A man can really fall in love with this new electric toy,
And how well he controls it separates the man from boy.
It is vacation syndrome. Do as the natives when in Rome,
And if not with the real thing, by all means with a clone.

The question need be asked, “Just what is the appeal?”
To be consumed so greatly by a thing that's not for real?
It's power! Don't you see? A man who's normally a toad
Can reign supreme as lord and master over his computer code.

Women use these toys adeptly to achieve a certain end, oh well.
The scenario does sound familiar. It rings a social bell.
A meaningful relationship is what she really seeks
And if that's not forthcoming, her interest quickly peaks.

The battle of the sexes is now reduced to computer-ese.
"Shrinks" are explaining the reasons, charging exorbitant fees.
Freud called such conflicts sexual, which hi-tech hasn't marred,
For computer macho's merely going from floppy disks to hard.

I love going from floppy too hard. In fact, I'm hardly floppy any more because hard and so much better. Will go beyond hard to solid-state very soon (you know, as in “stiff”, if not catatonic). ;-)

Eloquently expressed. The same could be said about politics, science, work, sports... all you have to do is change a couple of details. Some things never change!
