Immortally Wounded

One day in Spring I saw two cardinals playing. The tragic end of that event inspired this poem.

For all who believe all living things are connected
I saw two Cardinals in their mating ritual.
A playful dogfight. Fluttering up, down, all around
In a mid-air ballet. Oblivious to all.
Joyous in the Spring tradition.
Recreation, Procreation, Jubilation.
He and she dancing, dodging, if they could... smiling.
She didn’t see the car. Didn’t know the danger.
Cruel fate.
She reeled and sat for a moment
Stunned on the road
Wings spread, head turning side to side
So slowly. Puzzled, questioning.
Then gently rolling to her side
She entered death’s endless sleep.
And touched my soul.
This is profound and emotionally wise... "Immortally Wounded". Very impressive composition.
In admiration,
