Fluttering, butterfly snowflakes
Gliding silently on the pine-scented mountain air
Feather-like, they rise
On updrafts, then fall gently
On the branches of the evergreens.
Kissing the needles,
Sticking there,
Waiting to be joined
By other bits of frozen, prismatic poetry.
Still other wandering
Butterfly snowflakes
Continue the journey
To the frozen earth beneath and around the trees
Sticking to a few
Stubborn, hardy blades of grass
Blanketing the earth with a white silence.
From Mountain top
To Peaceful valley below
Eventually, inevitably
The white, green, earth quilt decorates everything.
Bringing an unearthly quiet
To the mountains and valleys.
Only the breeze whispering
Occasionally
Through the trees
Or the voice
Of a distant bird or animal
Breaks winter’s silent grip on the landscape.
Nature’s musical
Accompaniment
A symphony of beauty, peace and splendor.
When my eyes and ears
Open to the incomparable joy
Of this spectacular concert for the soul
The fuel for my spirit’s journey
Flows into me
And fills my heart to capacity
So the essence of my being
Might survive
And thrive
Until Spring again refuels me.
