Was there anything before "time" began?
Before man gazed into a volcano
and imagined "Hell?" Or before a man,
seeing exquisite beauty was moved so
by colors of a sunrise or sunset
that the invention of "Heaven" became
inevitable. Is that what we get
when fantasy must be given a name?

"Imagine there's no heaven," Lennon wrote.
"It's easy if you try." No "Hell" below...
"Above us, only sky." Just a lifeboat
in a troubled sea? A safe place to go
when reality overwhelms? To hide
our fragile, frightened souls when worlds collide?
