Homeless
Said ‘I'm hungry, help me please?’
Passed him by just like a breeze
But, something in his voice so soft
Told me that I was aloft.
Turned around and said ’How much?’
Saw his eyes of blue so soft
Took him to Kentucky Fried
Watched his face - he could have died.
Name was Steve, homeless, alone
Became this way when love grew cold
Everyone from him disowned
When he chose to drink alone.
Only half a family to know
Never belonged, outside the fold
Sexually abused, so confused
Life disowned - love is cold!
Never knew a love defined
Only knew love in decline
Everyone was moving through
looking for their perfect view.
Went to college, much to share
Knew the philosophic Socratic dare
But none of this replaced the view
That everyone needs someone to care.
The lowly street came into view
At least down here all fit one shoe
Every hour a state of grace
Wondering what will feed disgrace.
Said he wants to begin anew
Forty five and death in view
Wants to build some self-esteem
So depressed, what is real?
Hugged him true , but left him blue
I just walked away
Did nothing much to ease his plight
Only left him to the night.
Often I think of Steve so thin
Maybe he died on the street that night?
Maybe he was paying for my sins?
Maybe now he is fulfilled?

An act of love is not measured for its greatness volume, every little counts and you should not feel guilty for go with your life.
Steve, wherever he is now, would remember the one that did stop to do something for him.
A raw poem, well written and not ducking the punches.
Please, keep writing.
