The Empty Time of Love’s Pantomime
Djbeaulieu, 08-01-07
We sit here, together, but we’re alone – alone?
Yes, we are a lone: you there and me here.
Yes, we sit together in silence, but I’m not sure why.
Something about “the elephant in the living room.”
I reach out and gently, ever so gently caress your hand,
but it is empty, no feeling, and no response.
I feel no more of your love.
I lean over, softly, hoping a kiss will do the trick.
But, it is rejected too, not even a blink.
I feel the blankness of your love.
We are together, but we are not!
I lean into you and place my cheek on your shoulder,
it drops, you squirm and sigh.
I feel your coldness – its getting stone cold.
I think, perhaps, the mother instinct will sneak through,
so softly and gently I place my head on your breast,
but you turn and raise a very cold shoulder.
Yes, all privileges are gone.
We are together, but we are alone!
We used to cuddle, but now you turn your back.
We used to hug and kiss, but now you turn and leave.
I try to talk, to understand, to listen with intent,
but to no avail your ears are deaf.
Your response is the simple- cutting silence,
your face, firm in your casting of the spell.
Yes, still you will not let me rise,
rise above my mistakes in order to love.
We are together, but we are not!
I lick my wounds and wonder why?
You just look with a tear in your eye.
It is there I see the cavern of separation,
The pain of our love lost.
Sometimes, no matter how hard one tries
Love just slowly a methodically disappears and dies.
Through the agony of a million, single tears.
We are together, but still all alone!
There is no more bonding or intimacy
only the sadness of empty moments.
We walking silently along in step
with the slow beat of our dying hearts.
We are like “dead men walking;”
waiting for the final moments of our sentence
so we may pass on into the vast emptiness of oblivion.
We are together, but we are not!
