Dad’s Birthday

By Robert T. Wood

Copyright © 2015 by Robert T. Wood

Today is my Dad's birthday

If he were still alive he would be 93 but he died at 66

I thought he was old back then

But now that I am 68, it makes me sad that he died so young

Tonight is also the first night this year

That I saw fireflies in the creek behind our house

So I stood on our back deck and watched them for a while

Like birthday candles flickering about

I loved this!
...my dad was only 64 when he died...it was my birthday yesterday...but a lady never reveals her age...:-)
One of my very favourite pieces of prose is by John Ruskin talking about the fireflies in Italy at the Fonte Branda..Fireflies cast a magical spell...like the ones inyour description did....

..'how they shone! Moving like fine-broken starlight through the purple leaves..How they shone....' John Ruskin...

Your poem is definitely one for my library...thank you....

What a great finishing stanza! I remember my dad as a very old man. Today I am 10 years older than he was when he died. I would go out and watch some fireflies if we had any. I guess I'll just recall my youth as I take my pills.

Seeing those fireflies brought back memories with your father. I have surpassed the lifetime of both of my grandfathers. They were much less healthy than I am at that age. As a general rule, most outlive their fathers.

A nice little moment, shared quite well. Isn't it funny how we often see those we miss dearly in the simplest of things most others would overlook?
