Alone

by Bruce Alan Humphrey — Read all 55 poems by Bruce Alan Humphrey

I did not see it, therefore it did not happen.

Sunday, December 24, 2006

I did not see it; therefore, it did not happen.

I did not see the death of one.

I did not witness the extermination of millions.

I did not write the history; therefore, it is false.

I will not believe what I did not write.

I did not sanction a soldier to die for me; I am free on my own accord.

I do not see the sacrifice of millions or feel the pain of their suffering.

I did not cry for lost.

I will not cry for those I did not know.

I did not hear it; therefore, it did not occur.

I need not be grateful for those who came before me.

I need not be grateful to those who greeted me with freedom.

I need no one to guide me through life.

I ask no one for help with the inequities of living.

I will not acknowledge the assistance for my way of thinking.

I did not ask for help, therefore I am myself.

I am me.

I am not lonely.

I need no one for help or love.

I love nothing for there is nothing to love.

I am not emotional, therefore I need no one.

I am isolated from humanity.

I am isolated from myself.

I, therefore, am not allowing myself to feel.

I will not feel for those who died before me.

I will not grieve for the sacrifice others have made for me. I will remain lonely.

So true words here of a person who detaches himself from society. They cannot believe things as they are and go into a world of their own and are not lonely but out of it and get no support from people who are not alone. I had a few months of no feelings at all and I know I was very alone then too cause when I came out of the state I wa ready ro go back with my family and to my home and loving husband.
In the past this really happened to me, and it is sad that it had to happen. I did it to myself. But ill not do it again. Words never rang so true for me to read in this one and acknowledge having gone trough what this person felt too.

KUDOS ON A JOB WELL DONE.

Mmmm.... There are psychotherapists who would have a field day with this one. It takes the fictional stance of someone in total sociocultural denial, self-inflicted social-sensory deprivation, like someone in a coma. However, the final line, "I will remain lonely," conflicts with the above-stated unfeeling isolation of "I am not lonely." I think this poem is a superb exercise in expressing how it would "feel" to have no feelings. Well done! And Merry Christmas to you.
