I found your story, not short, but rather long, so I scanned through much of it. I found the story quite typical and cliché. But certainly would appeal to youngsters as some kind of TV cartoon show or even teenage readers who grew up with television and hadn't read much hard science fiction. And, although you wrote that the story text was checked, I found a number of errors that a good editor would correct. They didn't hamper the story, and once again, while not my kind of story, probably appealing to young readers looking for feel-good fantasy to read.
Your first paragraph reminded me of my twin brother and I at that age. Unfortunately, although I was a fishing fool, and spent my swimming time mostly underwater, soon after getting my swimming lessons over at seven, headed to the high board to dive off rather than jump. I only jumped from high places where I was unsure of what was under the water. And unlike kids from Minneapolis with all those lakes and the Minnesota River nearby, we spent our teen years in a landlocked small farming town where we had to peddle our bikes to the small streams nearby, over 5 miles in any direction.
