The media make their fame by overstating the obvious. The more controversial they can make a story the better their standing among their peers and fans. Having worked in institutions that were predominantly African-American (the Africans there seem to have an entirely different viewpoint on life), I found a very mixed view of these issues. There is still a very strong difference in the way "color" is viewed among blacks as compared to whites who tend primarily to view differences in origin by name from European countries. But that diminishes quickly with each wave of immigration's assimilation. Blackness continues to be a problem for people of color as evidenced by percentages in almost every measure of current life.
Name-calling and epithets, slogans and insults have always been used to demean people and bully them. This kind of social activity limits some people to a life of second-class status. It's time we stopped talking insults and sharing compassion for everyone at every social level. To some extent, the media does that by pointing out the extreme cases. We should take a look at ourselves for what we really are before we judge people by our words.

Life is fragile. One minute you are here, and then gone the next, and no one knows why. Better to live, love, and laugh often. Future is what we make of it, the past... we can never go back to change anything. What we can't control we don't sweat over it. Concentrate on what we CAN do for ourselves.

A strange obsession, this. As if poetry will change things. One cannot blame laws and courts for psychotic behavior. It will always be with us and we must figure out how to deal with it without "after the fact" solutions like the legal system to somehow clean up dirty work.

Thoughts cannot be copyrighted, but if one puts it on paper and put the thoughts into a poem, then one can put a copyright symbol on it. We, poets, think a lot, both past and present, and we write what we want to share with others. No plagiarism whatsoever here. Everyone is writing his/her own thoughts to share with others. If everyone can read into others' minds there would not be any reasons for anyone to put the thoughts down on paper to share them.
