Reads like a whodunit. I'm not into whodunits, but your first chapter certainly is intriguing.
I really like your use of adjectives and similes. Also, you are developing your two cop characters, an often used dichotomy of good cop, bad cop, very well. A rather unorthodox way of collecting evidence, but they may have had authorization to investigate a murder. After three months, green ferns in an apartment would certainly turn to a nice dead color of brown without water (or light). I know, the angel did it. ;-)

best wishes for your writing success, why not post a poem, an article, a short story or two, maybe a snipped of a chapter from your book, the more you add to your den the more the likelihood that others will find your work and hope to find more!!
