Like you, I have no way of knowing for certain but I suspect Michael Jackson tried to live as ecumenically as possible in the sense of attempting to connect with God, or a sense of God, through the major religions in order to also connect with fellow human beings around the world. Whatever form his beliefs may have taken, it's very difficult to listen to a song like "Will You Be There" or "Keep the Faith" and think he was not very devout in his own way, whatever that way may have been.
