Yes this is, "a stark and riveting piece." It seems to describe some apocalyptic and event where the best way out is death. But then, at the end, it refers to a a pet that lasted less than a year and makes one wonder if this patent was "loved to death" in some kind of abuse that the caretaker misunderstood.
I have a much more upbeat look at life and will not writing like this except on Halloween where I try to write darkly sometimes to go beyond the usual kiddie approach.

The subtext in this is intriguing, sarai sage. It's difficult being human. But there is no chance, no destiny, no fate, that can circumvent, hinder, or control the firm resolve of a determined soul. For some mysterious reason I've never 'wandered aimlessly'. Since I was a child I have always been focused and driven. Unfortunately, though, even with the Light shining on us, we still cast shadows that can affect others in less than stellar ways. Your piece brought to mind a quote by Pliny the Elder: "The depth of darkness to which you can descend and still live, is an exact measure of the height which you can aspire to reach". A stark and riveting piece. Peace to you... r
