As a child, I certainly enjoyed the Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Gulliver's travels, and Alice in Wonderland. I realize that the last two were satires and that's why I tend to gravitate towards fantasies that are satires rather than fantasies that are merely fanciful or soap operas. It seems like once a classic fantasy is written, all the vultures sweep in and create endless spinoffs to the point where they become ridiculous in spite of garnering huge box office receipts.
I prefer either one if it is a good story. If it is a ripoff of a good story, I'll pass.

You certainly have a good point. I was just watching the last episode of the series, Turn, about the first spy ring in the Revolutionary War. I remarked how beautiful the lead spy was. And I'm trying to figure out why she is so attracted to her male counterpart who seems to be quite inept and bungling, as well as not very handsome compared to some of the other actors in the series. In fact, the male leads are all very handsome as the real George Washington was at that time. It never hurt a man to be good-looking while assuming a leadership role. However, you are right, with a few exceptions like Queen Victoria, Eleanor Franklin, and perhaps, Cleopatra, even women in history had to be beautiful to gain leadership roles.

I see you have one novel. That's a start. Although I don't like the term, beginning "Indie" writers like you and I don't stand a chance in the larger scheme of things. I don't enter writing contests because it is so demoralizing to be the one in 100 (or more, depending upon the popularity of the contest) that wins.
I tell everyone that your books won't sell, in spite of what your friends and relatives tell you. As LaBelle Rouge and shown us in her advice from great authors, many of them didn't sell for many years, and it was only after building a reputation and dogged persistence that they finally had a book or story that sold big.
We should all write for the peer joy of it. I do. And when someone likes my writing, it makes me happy. If they don't, that's all right, too. I like fantasy and prefer truly science-based science fiction although science fantasy and science soap opera like Star Trek and Star Wars seems to sell much bigger because it is full of action and all that bull ship that those into escapism like.
Keep writing and improving your writing through the best advice you can get, and know that your legacy will be what you have written and shared with others, rather than your fame playing some other "character" other than yourself.
