A rather typical sci-fi story with a metal ship going the speed of light? There is another saying: "It's not the speed that kills, it's the sudden stop!?
A lot of defying physics and chemistry here. Also a lot of gizmos of questionable value and use. Can't identify elements? We seem to be able to identify elements on planets on distant stars we cannot see. I think you gave some definition that in another dimension even atoms "change shape."
While this whole story doesn't rely much on science, but on fantasy surrounding what other worlds and other intelligent "sentient," being slightly like, its redeeming grace is the lesson at the end where humans completely mistake something being done to save looks like food in a way that disgusts humans. The old fallacy of "eyewitness validity." What you see, in other words, may not be what is really happening.
