Sometimes it bees that way… I assume this is a short, but true story. At least the story about the story you dreamed. I have three books of short stories that I've dreamed and one of them turned into a novel. Of course there are some dreams that I cannot write about or do not have the writing ability to write about. Maybe you've been reading spy novels or watching spy movies lately.
Wouldn't it be nice if you received the lyrics and the melody for the next song of the year billboard winner in the category of your dreams?

That's a good outline of the story. Hollywood loves sequels, and they often make more money than the original. Margaret Mitchell is long dead. But what happens after the Civil War is more dramatic in some ways than the war itself. So I would go ahead and write the novel if one hasn't already been written.
It is sad to see those terms describing the portion of black blood again. But historical novels should never be politically correct. Young people going to movies and reading historical novels should be exposed to the terrible truth of history so they will not romanticize terrible things done by people. Unfortunately, in many ways, Gone with the Wind romanticizes the slaveowning rich Old South.

Certainly different take on the famous Spider-Man comic books and movies. Takes a little getting used to. Seems like a rather primitive way of going about space business. But comic books are all about some kinds of nostalgia and wishful thinking that is very inefficient in scientific and engineering circles, but can be done in fictional settings without all of the restraints of reality.
Did you know that I've predicted that interstellar space travel cannot be done by hard surfaced metal spaceships? I'll bet that at least 90% of science-fiction stories about spaceships, including Star Wars and Star Trek, use metal spaceships. Now you are using metal spiderwebs? Did you know that silkworm fibers are stronger than steel?

I recall that Thoreau studied ants activity like you were. And it is ironic that you had to experience the tragedy of their demise. I think the lesson here is that we should be careful of killing insects because they form the foundation of our food chain and by trying to eradicate them we may be eradicating ourselves.
Recently I got tired of the sugar ants getting into my juice and lunch before noon, so my partner put out a little sweet killing juice that I understand they took back to their mound outside the house so they all could die. It was probably a good thing I didn't watch the massacre. I have watched several documentaries about how Jim Jones dispatched his ant colony the same way in Guyana.

Thanks for the laugh. I haven't read T.S. Eliot, perhaps, except some snippets in school that I have forgotten. As I age, I am discovering famous people that I never of before, revealing my absolute ignorance of so many things.
Going back to the peaches. During times when these vendors do not have a crop to sell, I suspect they go to the grocery store, buy their wares for the day, and then sell them at a marked up price to you, the consumer, that believes you are getting a better product by buying it on the street.
The only way to know that you are getting the best produce is to buy in season when the price is very low. Buying anything, like peaches, out of season, is expensive and likely to be doctored in one way or another.

Perhaps. If we solve the problems facing us right here on earth in this century we certainly will develop machine/human interface in some way or another that I have attempted to describe in my monograph that I posted here, Intelligence and the Machine, 45 years ago. They will not be the comic book superheroes, but they will have super abilities.
And, we will have to colonize our solar system and learn how to use the power of the sun if we are ever going to leave. But, like you have suggested, we are unraveling the algorithms necessary to do all kinds of things that even 50 years ago were thought impossible. If science can win over political will, we will be well underway, thanks to projects like 100 Year Starship, funded by DARPA.
In the words of After the Gold Rush… "Taking mother nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun."

In the ninth grade, I was deemed deficient in English (and probably still am) and asked to join the dunderheads relearning grammar, structure, spelling, etc. The elite part of our class who were English geniuses read and evaluated great literature like The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, Evangeline and The Merchant of Venice. While I struggled with the mechanics of English writing, I overheard the geniuses discussing these great works of literature. As a result, I never read any of them, although know much about them, especially their most often used quotes about the albatross, the beautiful opening of Evangeline, and of course, the pound of flesh taken by the Jewish money lender, Shylock.
I don't feel deprived, but I do feel guilty because I'm currently in a short-term high-interest lending agreement with a lady who needed money to renovate a home for a very lucrative business (not pot growing). She was supposed to pay off the loan in about two years, but has continually added to the loan and has continued to pay on the principal every month for six years. Based on the interest I'm receiving, I feel like Shylock. ;-)
I'm not a Christian or a Jew, so it doesn't enter into my thinking. But I do think it's a bit usury to try to force her to pay off the loan quickly with high interest.

Time is a dimension, no more, no less. If it were not for the fact that we are moving through it, it would seem no different from Length, width, and height. The movement along this "dimension" in the direction of what we call "the future", is what gives the illusion that time is "passing". It is not time that is passing but the "we" part of the above explanation. The question to answer is "Why are we moving through time?" I believe it has to do with intersecting universes. String Theory supports that.

Joel, really enjoyed reading these accounts of your travels. The hitchhiking brings back memories of myself and a couple of friends backpacking the Pacific Crest trail from British Columbia across into Washington and Oregon right out of college. Only made a few hundred miles though. Never forget coming off the trail once in a while to restock supplies. Such a strange feeling coming out of those islolated mountains after weeks and going back into civilization for a day or two and eating all the ice cream we could devour before going back on the trail. Good luck wherever you go.
I will get around to checking out kompoz one of these days like you suggested. I had been dealing wtih some thumb trouble that I play the guitar with for months and just quit writing songs and starting writing poetry but hope to get back into the song writing feeling again now. May the sun light your path on all your travels. Keep us posted.

Now I know why you haven't posted songs in the Poetry section lately. From your reports, it looks like you have really explored the scene and it is, like I expected, filled with wannabes and ten-year burnouts. I think your chances for recognition are higher with YouTube, but I admire your effort in trying to promote yourself and your work.
Waffle Houses are a Southern thing. I first encountered them and liked their breakfasts in Georgia 40 years ago. When I moved to this house 33 years ago, my next-door neighbor and his son, who rented because he was always on the move, was installing air-conditioning units in all of the Waffle Houses being built.
From your description, Haight-Ashbury hasn't changed from 1967-68 when I frequented there to soak up the ambience, but not get involved in the drug scene or living on the street.
I love how you treated those homeless guys. Reminds me of when I used to pick up hitchhikers, feed them, allow them to clean up in my motel room and stay the night, and even drive on my way to deliver them where they wanted to go. If more people did that, homelessness would not such a problem.
I envy your ride on the Zephyr. Always wanted to do something like that, but never did.
You are doing all the right things. May your way be smooth and wonderful whatever path you take.

I'm also not sure how this missing scene would fit in. Y'know, I'm not at all certain that is such a good idea. Reminds me of the Star Trek NG episode where Data is giving a violin recital, and he is asked how he did it...he said he listened to recordings of all the greatest violinists and incorported all their techniques so that he could obtain the opptimum results.
Part of the interest, genius (and fun, I suspect) of music is how a musician's interpretaiton informs the oeiginal composition. It's more interesting to listen to say, a Beethoven symphony as done by a number of differenrt orchestras and compare the differences. To me the diversity of interprettion makes the individual composition more interesting.

I think you covered white lightning quite well. One time at my Smiling Jack department head's house in Huntington where I taught for a year at Marshall University, he offered me a taste of the dog from a bottle of tonic with the name scratched off and written in its place, Wayne County Tonic Water. Wayne County was just north of Hatfield and McCoy territory.
It was clear as glass and was on fire and lightning as it coursed down my throat and dried it to a raw desert parch on the way. And the alky coursed directly to my brain without taking any watered-down sidetracks. A far cry from the shine offered in liquor stores in Mason jars.

I find myself singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic quite often these days. Why never dated gorillas. One of my girlfriends told me a funny story. She came home one night to her dark family room. Sitting in the corner where she didn't see her at first was a woman that she could only describe as a "Gorilla." Scared her half the death when the woman rose from her chair.
It turned out the woman was stalking her errant son who couldn't hold a job and was staying home with his mother. They were a strange couple for a while until he kicked her out. But she came back in the house because she knew how to get in one night and stole some of his intimate things like his shaving equipment (she could shave with it?), his deodorant and his underwear.
Be careful what you dream or ask for. Incidentally, real gorillas are very kind and loving vegetarians and have a very bad rap simply because of the way they look.

Europeans, explorers, kings and businessmen (not businesswomen) saw the unspoiled land as an opportunity to exploit it to the maximum for its, seemingly, endless wealth. We all know now that there is a limit to what the American continents can provide and we have overreached it to the point where the last day of America may actually be in our future like your song predicts.

I like this, Joel. And I really appreciate your research into the crow. I already knew about the ‘murder’ of crows because I saw a documentary about crows and how they can recognize human faces and ‘remember’ the person. They are a very intelligent bird. You are right about the harsh and raucous noise of their gravelly voices joined together. It is alarming. I live in the forest and that grating chorus is absolutely an alert about danger of eagle robbing nest or of raccoon climbing the nest tree, or other predators or trouble in the jungle. Your piece here is very curious to me, in that I can’t tell if you write of their awfulness or write of their connection to nature and ‘OUR’ awfulness. Calling out a name we don’t understand and us as fools seems a plus for the crows. Poisoning the sky with their wings seems a plus for the human. But best of all….I REALLY liked that last stanza: “…and the crows they murdered me/because although I was a witness/I refused to see/“. Plus for the crow, minus for the human. But the meanings inside the lines are brimming with human condition. Old sol isn't going away anytime soon, but we better slather on the sunscreen and drink plenty of liquids because our world is about to heat up in a way that we can't just flip a switch and air-condition it. Summer is likely to be around long after were gone. And it may be hotter or cooler depending upon whether we're still meddling with it or not.
If we could create a fusion bomb on a much smaller scale a couple of places around the earth, we wouldn't have to worry about summer at all.
But your lyrics have a nice, apocalyptic tone to them.

Danny Boy was running through my head. But these lyrics were about surviving after. And what Danny was holding in his hand was probably a pistol to his head. Suicide is very common among those with PTSD.
My only uncle who was a veteran from WWI, certainly had what was described as "shell shock." But he wasn't anywhere in the trenches. As a medic, he was in a North Carolina hospital treating soldiers who came back with hideous wounds and amputations. And then along came the Spanish flu to an to his misery.
He got rich during the 20s only to lose it all in 29. Became a miser collecting coins and amassed a fortune in coin sets until the 1950s, abusing his wife and children, until my aunt had him put away in a veteran's hospital.

I checked out the link and recall leaving a comment to that wonderful lyric about such a terrible war. In this century, at this time, a mere 105 years ago, that war brought great suffering and hardship, along with that to our boys overseas.
I often revisit in my mind and sing the refrain, Danny Boy, with its haunting melody. "Danny boy, oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling. Throughout the glen and down the mountainside." And the more jubilant, When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again, "Hoorah."
We are so lucky in this century that so far, our war surgical and computerized like a video game. Or are we?

I've been seeing them clearly in my mind's eye lately while waking up. Interesting how they creep in like your song suggests. And I do recall that movie that had a great theme song where Whoopi Goldberg was an unlikely conduit between the fear of losing and loss.
I believe that's what ghosts are: the fear of losing so much that the mind creates an entity to substitute for the loss. A ghost of what is real. Your song isn't sure what it is, asking the question, "Am I a ghost?"

Although he is paralyzed and doesn't seem to understand the plight of many disabled in Texas, having received a $20 million settlement for his injury of a fallen tree, our Republican governor was the only one from the Republican Party that I know of that came to the memorial service for George Floyd yesterday. I heard some of the singing and as always, it was gospel and it was uplifting.

Coonhound lovers will flock to this lyric. But I am more in favor of the bloodhound chasing the runner down. Sound like there's a bloodhound lyric out there that could be written making your blood curdle.
I once put out some stale bread for the birds that a country place I was renting. The bread stayed out there on the stump for many days with no takers. It rained and the bread got soaked. Then, one day, I saw a dog eating it. The dog looked young and friendly, but quite hungry with wet bread hanging from its jaws. Fortunately, it had a collar with a name and phone number.
I called and a grateful guy answered. Told me that he had two of his prize coonhounds stolen. He drove over as quickly as he could and picked up the dog. Turned out it was worth $3200 in 1971. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Probably a song there somewhere.
