I must say as I read the beginning of the book, I had a visual image in my mind for where the storyline was headed only to be completely surprised in chapter five when the author, David Seaburn, “flipped a switch” on the plot, going a completely different direction – but it worked! “Gavin Goode” is an excellent easy-read that is hard to put down. I read it in one setting. The story pulls you in from the beginning. The center of focus of the book is a gun, an AK 47 and the storyline stems from one event but opens to dialogue concerning life, death, marriage, infidelity, secrets and lies, drug addiction, guilt, and religion. “Gavin Goode” has many twists and turns throughout the numerous side plots that develop within the story, but Seaburn does an excellent job bringing all the storylines to a conclusion and tying them all together in the end. The ending is refreshing in the eyes of humanity but very surprising and unexpected!
The characters are so well developed that the reader becomes personally engaged by all. In fact, each chapter centers on an individual character helping the reader to learn all about the personality (good and bad) of the character. Seaburn does a wonderful job interacting the personality traits of all the characters, even the secondary characters in the novel. One of these secondary characters, Rev. Lorde provides one of the most prophetic statements in the book when he declares that “sometimes you have the thinnest of filaments to hold onto; how holding on is faith and the filament, ever strong, is grace.”
“Gavin Goode” is a wonderful book that I cannot recommend high enough. Definitely a five star out of five stars. I completely enjoyed the easy writing style of David Seaburn and looking forward to reading additional works by him. This is my first book of his, but it won’t be my last. I’m a fan! Check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
