Ronald and Budd,
Thank you, Ron, for your constructive comments (and I will address the typos--had to retype as I couldn't seem to copy/paste from original document and guess I missed things). This was written for a children's contest and the word count was very short--it was accepted and published. I like your idea of expanding it and will keep a copy of your comments in the file for future reference.
Budd: I'm really glad you enjoyed reading this. I will post more stories at a later date; got to figure out what I'm doing wrong in order to copy/paste first. LOL

A haunting tale. One so difficult to tell from here and now. Most were not fortunate to work in the big house––usually only if they were light of skin. Many of those light of skin blended in with northern white folks later and avoided discrimination.
I would recommend that you remove the typos. I know this is a shortened version, but she seems to get to Canada very quickly starting late in the summer and probably only able to walk about 25 miles a day over mountains and crossing rivers (a bit about these would be interesting), it would be best if she started in the early spring to make it by fall to Canada.
I know from experience. I walked 50 miles one day with a great lunch and a level, paved way to walk on. It took me 11 hours.
