Just read MEMORIES. It brought back so many, many memories that tears formed in my eyes thinking about those times. You described my childhood exactly. I was born in 1939 in Mize, MS, and turnips was the order of the day with milk and cornbread. And yes, I remember going to bed hungry also. A good article well writen and entertaining. Thanks for sharing.

I know what you mean about people talking about being in a depression. We may get there, but we're a long way from it right now. I too, remember cornbread, but we were lucky enough to have a source of buttermilk, so buttermilk and cornbread was my favorite, though black-eyed peas were a real treat at times.
Lye was an ingredient in making hominy. Mom made it by putting it in a an earthstone churn with the corn and leaving it to eat away the hard skins from the grains. Then several water baths would wash the lye (caustic sodium hydroxide) away so we could cook and eat the swollen grains that were hominy.
Was the depression only in Mississippi? LOL I grew up there too.

Oh Mary, you well descibe years of grown and work needing to be done but what I see and hear is a history of lives well lived and memories worth millions, beautiful and heartfelt writing..
