Okay, here l go, this book took me by surprise in the best possible way and l thought l would give my thoughts. I often enjoy picking up a book without prior knowledge, to see whether l can be surprised and this certainly delivered. The narrative follows a soldiers harrowing journey through the chaos of war, spiralling into madness as he struggles for survival. However this is merely the foundation of a much deeper story. As I delved further into the book, driven by a need to uncover what would happen next. Alongside the action there's a heartfelt love story that reveals layers beyond its surface. The book does contain graphic depictions of battle, each one is purposefully crafted to enhance the main character's arc. The characters are richly developed making their struggles and triumphs resonate on a profound level. In conclusion let me say that this is not just a story about war even though it is an integral part of it, it goes much deeper.

Not since I read The Thin Red Line, have a seen such vivid language describing battle. I love historic fiction, especially when it's based on true events, because it teaches us lessons about how we approach our future. Wars should be obsolete. World War I was "The war to end all wars." Or so we thought. As for the "Angels of Mons," I can't say what actually happened. Eyewitness accounts often are wrong. The fog of war can create experiences like this as well as severe wounds putting people in a dreamlike state.
Great writing, nonetheless. I spotted one little error. I believe the word rout doesn't have an e, unless the British version does, my faux pas.

A very creative concept that opens up a lot of possibilities. Reminds me a bit of A Little Shop of Horrors in a way. If it is real, let me know where it is. I think for a historical novelist, obtaining the memories of someone from the distant past could create great novels from first-hand experience.
You have mixed past and present in not a good way. I would choose past because you are writing as though it already happened. If you choose present, you will have to stick with it as the story unfolds.

I look forward to this story's continuation. You presented just enough for one sitting, while whetting the reader's appetite. I like the whole premise of the story where one is able to purchase someone else's "memories in a bottle" for $1.99. Perhaps they're vexing memories others want to forget.

The title fits your literal premise of a mammoth virus decimating the world's population. However much you fictionalized science pertaining to the ozone layer, this story raises the issue of environmental awareness and the importance of world vigilance for its preservation and restoration.

I like science fiction stories like this. I write them. And, your basic precept, that an ancient virus might come from the thawing of a mammoth seems to make some sense. But a story like this has to have some sense of science or people like me will reject it. Here are the problems that I see: First, the hole in the ozone has clearly been attributed to the use of hydrofluorocarbons in aerosol sprays. Regulatory action as far back as the 1970s, worldwide, has resulted in the hole in the southern hemisphere being closed and is now returning to normal.
Second, while the threat from nuclear plants and radioactive waste products continues, poisoning water and causing serious problems of genetic mutation, global warming is clearly the result of CO2 and methane being released into the atmosphere. Finally, survivalists that I have watched would rarely have more than about two years of food in their cabins and most require year-round hunting for protein. It is doubtful that anyone could live in and survive perpetual winter or an Ice Age. Our ancestors, plants and animals survived primarily by migrating south of the glacial sheets of ice where food was plentiful.
The story is well-written, but I noted too little things. I think that both "surly" and "surely" work in that sentence. Also that you probably meant, "used" rather than use in the first line of the third paragraph.

In the beginning I thought the story was going to be a little flat with all the description. And then you got into the discussion between White and Copeland, and the fun began. Randy was rather abrupt but appropriate for its the little twist. Especially the, "… Asking for a refund," part.

I would think that the most insidious things that the Jolly Green Giant does is add cancer-causing ingredients to his canned vegetables and too much salt. Lately, his vegetables have all been genetically modified--even worse. The worst thing about being encased in curing concrete is that it reaches a very high temperature in a chemical reaction. Your hero's feet would be burned to the 3rd degree if the concrete wasn't removed very quickly.
I'm not sure why you brought the Wicked Witch into this story. It might have been better to make it two stories.
Editorial notes:
"… Getting [past] the next two members…"… Jolly Green Giant at a [abandoned] construction [site]." Several more. Past tense rather than present tense might be better, like "he yelled," rather than "he yells."

I am not a believer, so I do not fear a wrathful God to keep me in line by all kinds of rules, starting with the 10 Commandments, part of which are obsolete, and part of which are good ethics.
Fear, on many levels, is rampant in our society today. Largely because of the way we receive information. Psychologists tell us we are born with only two fears: the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling. All the other fears are instilled by learning, from others and from experiences. I have much experience and have found that most fears that most people have are totally unfounded in fact. But the Internet, making everyone a witness to everything by taking a video or a photograph of something and then putting it online for everyone to see, enhances the fear in people from rumor and innuendo that results.
You may say that the fear comes from the devil. But I say that our ability to overcome fear comes from the devil in the details. Statistically, most fears, like crime in my neighborhood, are unfounded. Any survey will show that most people are good and caring. When we blow out of proportion the bad and the evil, something that preachers do on Sundays and rumors we hear, alters our perspective making us fear more than we are really in fear of.
The only fear we have to worry about "is fear itself." FDR
