Sleaze (Book) - 12/11/2020 12:34:15 PM
Certainly the kind of title that would get one's attention. But southern sleepy towns seem to have gotten a bad rap from writers. Lately, I've been interested in inbred activities in northern towns like Fargo and Big Sky.
Looks like you got quite a lineup of popular books. Congrats on another one.

A Whale of Tale (Richard, the paper boy Book 13) (Book) - 11/17/2020 8:32:01 AM
I've been working on a book of my adventures in Wisconsin and beyond and just ran across this thirteenth book in your series of tales about what it was like growing up in Arkansas that you have labeled fiction, but have used your own name and, apparently, much of your childhood experience for your fictional, and probably real, paperboy.
I have to assume without further information that the "Whale of a Tale" is probably a big lie. But I'm usually wrong.

The Coon Hunt from Hell (Short Story) - 4/29/2021 11:33:55 AM
That certainly was some story! You are very lucky not to have been hurt worse. A wild animal, when it fears for its life can really be vicious.
Although I had coons around my house in Georgia, I never went on a raccoon hunt. I do know how you felt because I climbed the tree once to pull a squirrel out of a hole by its tail. It took all my strength to do it and when he came out, he bit me. And then fell right into the mouth of my dog below. My dog was so surprised that he let the squirrel go.
My uncle got a Brittany spaniel retriever, so he and my grandpa went hunting. They discovered a coon in a tree and my uncle shot it. They were amazed when the little spaniel dove in the water and brought it to them. The raccoon weighed 35 pounds. Grandpa, who grew up on a wilderness homestead that became his farm, loved eating it like all wild things.

Energy (Short Story) - 4/1/2021 11:58:26 AM
The 20th century was the oil and gas century. But as early as the 1970s it was clear that we were not conserving enough or considering renewable, sustainable technologies, but were opting for convenience over utility, one time use over lifetime use, short-term gains of boom and bust rather than long-term investment in the planet and in our lives.
We have been wasteful, arrogant, and failed to clean up our messes in favor of getting rich in the very short term and leaving our grandchildren with a planet that is dying.
We cannot return to normal after the pandemic. I don't care if gasoline is $10 or $100 a gallon. I have conserved all my life and wished that others would have as well. I saved a lot of money as a result and am healthier than others who have "pissed" away in selfish indulgence leading to bad health in later years.
You are a protagonist for the fossil fuel industry, not understanding the energy situation at all. We must convert rapidly to renewables, stop our use of plastics made from oil and gas that are polluting our environment, stop cutting down and burning our forests for monoculture factory farming and stop using pesticides and herbicides causing the extinction of insects, birds and mammals at an alarming rate. Scientists everywhere are warning that we may be too late to save the planet. We cannot return to business as usual.
We need to quit playing around with words like jobs and economic concerns and focus on fixing our nest before we lose it.

Ridin' the Rocket (Short Story) - 1/25/2021 10:49:38 AM
A cute little story about a boy taking a journey of discovery to his grandparents and back, learning as he went. I think there are too many "shoots" and “hecks" for reality. Even the dumbest kids I knew back in the day didn't use those words as a normal part of talking.
Interesting to learn about the Rock Island Rocket. And delivery trucks bringing milk and ice or ice boxes, the predecessor of the refrigerator. But when I was a kid I could discern between a Indian in the street and one that was erroneously portrayed as a savage in cowboy and Indian movies.
But there were ignorant city kids I recall. Like the ones that thought that milk grew in bottles. ;-)

a finely penned story
Ridin' the Rocket (Short Story) - 1/22/2021 4:03:16 AM
A fine read capturing the times, dialect, and enthusiasm of a young boy whose Grandpa imparted an important lesson for him to have and hold going forward.
Returning to my Arkansas Roots (Article) - 5/9/2021 9:31:52 AM
A very compact way of describing your life. Our lives paralleled in some ways and differed wildly in others. It certainly is a letdown to graduate and find out that there are no jobs in your field of study. But I found that jobs were more serendipity than purpose anyway.
While you grew and matured in the oil industry, I spent my time in higher education focusing on conservation and renewables. I got to build my dream home in Atlanta in 1980 that was solar passive and all electric, but cost only $15 per month to run the heat pump and primarily florescent lights summer or winter. One of my students, with a similar sized house, a colonial replica, complained of $300 plus electric bills during the summer. The place was on bear Mountain, 8 miles from downtown Atlanta, overlooking an 8 acre pond. You can download the PowerPoint photos here…
