You are about 6 months early like Amazon and Walmart with their Christmas in July.
On the other hand, I laughed all the way through at your attempts to please yourself when you should have listened to the boss. I recall my brother telling me that I should "Do everything your wife tells you to do and you'll keep the peace," after his experience with 17 years of marriage. She divorced him the next year.

You had me looking back at all the first impressions that turned sour for me as I read this. It seemed like my entire life, although there were times when first impressions went very well, I often had to spend considerable time proving that I was who I was, because others' impressions of me were not good.
While there are scads of books that tell us how to behave when we first meet someone, you would be surprised how many underestimated the ability of a man wearing a hand splint on his right hand--damaged goods.

Eh . . . First impressions are important no doubt, and the devious among us know that as well and work on modeling that first impression to gain favor. Still, I agree that first impressions are definitely important.
