The authors of Scala Coeli: the Ladder of Heaven, Mari Garcia and Joy Usher also run the Astro Mundi School of Astrology. Scala Coeli is a collection of six essays devoted to the philosophy and application of astrological principles. Mari and Joy are very experienced strologers, well known for their depth of knowledge and understanding.
If I could make an analogy to the way we eat in the modern world: just as we have ‘fast food’ and ‘slow food’ (the type which is prepared lovingly without consideration for time and eaten at a civilised and leisurely pace); then Scala Coeli is like slow food.
This is the book which you read ad digest on the favourite armchair at a leisurely pace, television and computer off, perhaps in front of a fire, with suitable food and drink on a side table to sustain the brain and maximise enjoyment without distraction.
For this is a book to be treated with reverence. Principles are explored in depth with an eye to their practical application in an astrological consultation. Beginning students will gain much from Scala Coeli and experienced astrologers will be delighted at the depth and exploration of astrological themes.
Joy’s essays include: Thema Mundi: the Birth Chart of the Universe (an exploration of its powerful influence on astrology); The Rulership Tree (applying the essence of planetary rulership to chart interpretation); and The Gift of Sight (the theory of aspects).
Mari’s essays include: The Moon’s Noddings: Benediction or Curse (a little known ancient technique); The Dragon’s Path: the Moon’s Nodes in Astrology (explores the theory of the Nodes and their interpretive application); Combustion and Cazimi (the relationship of the planets to the Sun).
The introductions to their respective group of essays were enjoyable reading and well worth the effort spent.
There is so much to recommend this book. It is a rare astrological work, written with sensitivity and contemplative depth. Take your time and read it slowly, without haste!
