Diagnostic error occurs because of a number of factors on the physician's side and the patient's side. My misdiagnoses were party because hernias in women are very rare and they do not present like a man's--no bulge. My hernias had nerve involvement as well.
I'm sorry to read that you have been misdiagnosed several times--its is very common.
Good for you for being so proactive as a patient with your own hernia.

It is really unfortunate that you had to go through that ordeal. Perhaps it is because you are a woman, that some physicians, fearing the potential of a lawsuit (I've heard that many gynecologists and quit the practice because they cannot afford malpractice insurance) have not given you the kind of thorough analysis required for a good diagnosis.
In my own experience, I have been mis-diagnosed several times and been given bogus treatments that I stopped myself as soon as I learned that they were not effective in any way. Doctors are only human and are easily swayed by the "latest" trend like the hard-driving neurologist who put me on prednisone for two years actually believing that it would, if not cure me, relieve my declining function from spinal cord injury.
Unlike you, when I felt that dull pain in my groin on Mother's Day, I had scheduled an appointment with a surgeon on Tuesday, thinking that it was a hernia. On Thursday, with a local anesthetic, it was surgically fixed, and by the following Monday, I was back at work and never had that pain again. The hernia that occurred on the other side three years later… I handled in the same manner. How men can go years without correcting a hernia, I don't know. The pain is not something I would care to bear very long. That's why I understand more than you know what you were going through.

I sent you a message. New to this so please bear with me.
I'm really sorry to hear about your knee problems. I'm glad that my article sparked some awareness. If you take cholesterol medication, you might want to research that in connection with joint pain as well as blood pressure medications.
Also, if you've taken antibiotics such as Levaquin or Cipro (flouraquinalones) you might want to look those up too I connection to muscle and cartiledge tears. Good luck and keep me posted. Best wishes,

Oh gosh! You've read my mail here. My doctor started me on a new blood-pressure medication around June this year. It made me light-headed, listless, and more prone to physical injury. I told him about it. He said my body would get used to it. August 18th I had to file a workers comp claim because I had sustained a wretchedly debilitating left knee injury doing work that I had done countless times before with no problems. I'd never had any problems with my legs or knees before in my whole life, and the horror of becoming a burden on my wife left me numb.
The MRI showed a rip in the medial ligament and a lateral tear in the meniscus with spontaneous osteonecrosis. Put me down like an old dog. Scared me. For three months I couldn't do anything. I'm back working now but only at about 70%. At night sometimes my left hip hurts so bad I have to get up and stretch and put the 'Thumper' on my lower back. I'm gonna do some in-depth research now about this and see if I can turn it around. Thanks for sharing this. Eye-opening. A light went on. I watched your news interview; you did good.

'Pain free'... what a blissful way to live. And I agree. So many doctors seem to be disconnected on various levels. I can totally relate to the frustration and fear that led you to take matters into your own hands. Enjoyed your telling of this. Congratulations.
