I know this was meant for Halloween, but I just got to it. What a beautifully written and magical tale! As an atheist, I find that pagan rituals are much more preferable and down to earth than religious dogma.
Your description and character development is beautiful and flawless. However, the story could use a thorough editing for several little errors that crop up. For example, an eye is not and I and an ore is not an oar. Also a couple of punctuation mark changes and touchup.

I'm not much for fantasy… But this was a fantastic tale with the kind of ending that I really like. “Don't mess with Mother Nature” was never better portrayed.

Quite a tale you've told here. While quite different, it reminds me of my short story Recreation (as in re-creation). You have a flair for writing, I especially like “filthy” nights. I wouldn't say you're a “lire” [liar], but you played us like a harper as you harped about the inevitability of reincarnation. ;-)
I like the moral and final cliché. Also remind me of the short film I saw once on the greedy fishermen who got caught by his own methods. It was so shocking I remember it in great detail to this day.
