It's All About the Mole (mo-lay) (Short Story) - 11/11/2013 7:23:49 AM
What a wonderful story! Filled with mystery and revelations as well as positive Hispanic values. Now, all it needs is some editing to help make the transitions easier and submission to some magazines for publication. When I started my engineering career at Lenkurt GTE in San Carlos California, we had a young rising engineer named Carlos Bofill. When the two-week shutdown came in August he rented a car and drove to Florida to see his parents. He was afraid to fly at that time (1968) because he thought he might be hijacked on the plane and end up back in Cuba. Earlier, when he was in college in the states, he went home for the Christmas holidays and caught one of the last flights out of Cuba before Castro shut them down. He got his parents out my boat later. While at the plant, I befriended a technician, Yesid Masquarra, the son of a Colombian naval commander. Yesid had served in the U.S. Army and as far as I know, was a citizen. He asked me to go with him to Mexico with his girlfriend, a young Catholic girl from Oregon who was a secretary over the Easter weekend. I declined for some reason. Anyway, he took the girl and married her down in Tijuana! Coming back, I had told him that I had brought tequila back. So when he got to the border, he showed the big bottle of tequila he had bought and they confiscated it. They began to suspect that the nice new VW and he had was stolen and that he was trying to enter the country illegally. He was held for several hours with his new wife until he contacted the plant and the company told the border people to let him go. Later, the young girl's parents in Oregon and his marriage annulled. Finally, I was on business in Austin when my car failed in East Austin and I had to get the carburetor overhauled in a shop there. I walked up the street to a Mexican restaurant about 5 PM. There was no one in the restaurant. I ordered chicken el carbon. The owner personally served it to me and cut it up for me. We talked. He told me he had come from Mexico City and opened the restaurant. When I left to go get my car there was still no one in the restaurant. I hope it survived. Ron

Nothing Is Something (Short Story) - 7/4/2013 6:45:53 AM
I kept looking for the “twist,” and there it was! Very creative. There are a couple of typos, otherwise nicely written. Have you written longer stories? Please post them. I have quite a few stories here in a couple of books of stories. I love to put a twist in my stories if I can think of one. Ron
