This highly impressive autobiography tells a tale of great hardship, but does so with wit and self-depreciating humor. Although the personal subject matter is at times harsh and vivid, the author shares his trials with incite and consideration for what he has learned. The reader follows along as this scared little boy survives, adjusts, and eventually thrives. I found it both heart-wrenching and candid, making me cry at times, and laugh unexpectedly at others. Focus is placed less on the events themselves and more on the author's thoughts and reactions to them, which gives the piece a uniquely human quality. The emphasis on hope and the choices that we do have in life, despite past circumstances, puts this memoir in a class of its own.
