I am also from Wisconsin and have enjoyed travel, but not work, in foreign countries. I first encountered many Indians while a graduate student in industrial engineering at the University of Wisconsin. I was fascinated with their many languages, religions and cultural beliefs. One student and I became roommates and lifelong friends.
Your experience at the immigration office reminds me of having to check in with immigration during my brief stay in Dhaka Bangladesh. It was strange sitting down at a bare table in a scarred old wooden chair facing a man who would stamp my passport while right next to me at the next table was a Chinese military officer in full uniform.
I'm sure your book will help others who are adventurous to leave the country and try out working in schools overseas. Nothing replaces first-hand involvement with people. One thing for sure… World over we are more alike than different.

An entertaining read with a few photos that will transport you to Cairo, Egypt, and make you feel what it's like to live in a Muslim society and work in an Islamic school.

The author and her husband made the very brave decision to pack up their bags and live abroad with two small children. Not to Paris or to Florence, mind you, but to a remote village in Africa and a small community in undeveloped Asia. The stories are just pieces of memories made in many years immersed in other cultures, forced to learn new languages, and live without the comforts so many of us take for granted. Such as running water in our homes. I was inspired and am now interested in learning how to become an international teacher, too!
